Original photograph of legendary film director Akira Kurosawa taken by Hajo Piebenga in 1973, comes with original stamp and date on the back. 

Akira Kurosawa was a Japanese filmmaker and painter who directed thirty films in a career spanning over five decades. He is widely regarded as one of the most important and influential filmmakers in film history. Kurosawa entered the Japanese film industry in 1936, some of his most memorable films include "Seven Samurai", "Ran" and "Rashomon".

Hajo Piebenga (1942-2014) was born in Velsen on December 15th of 1942 and moved to Rotterdam in his teen years. His father was a hobby photographer. Piebenga started in 1958 at Uitenbroek Film. Five years later he started a job at Artifo as an artistic photographer for Harry Mosch. In 1964 he started for himself. Piebenga mainly photographed Rotterdam, the bridges, the harbour, the White-House, Oranjeboomstraat and famous Rotterdam people were some of his favourite subjects. From 1972 until 2011 he worked for the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR). Since 1978 he combined photography with his job as a movie operator. For 30 years he worked as the house photographer of film-, dans- and music theater LantarenVenster where he photographed dance- and theater presentations as well as jazz concerts. He was probably the last to photograph Chet Baker days before his death.

Piebenga also photographed many different film festivals at LantarenVenster, like the Kurosawa Festival where the picture being sold here was taken.
